The second day of the Wrocław Digital Musicology School!

The second day of the Wrocław Digital Musicology School was devoted primarily to practical approaches to digital musicology and working with music data.

The morning began with a workshop led by Arkadiusz Margraf from the Poznań Supercomputing and Networking Center, who introduced participants to the basics of Python and its applications in musicological research. This was followed by a session conducted by Dr Marcin Konik from the Fryderyk Chopin Institute, focused on Humdrum and practical methods of working with digitally encoded musical materials.

In the afternoon, participants attended a lecture by David Lewis from the University of Oxford, devoted to various music encoding formats and their applications in digital editions and musicological research. The session provided both theoretical context and practical insight into contemporary approaches to music encoding and digital scholarly work.

The day concluded with practical group workshops led by dr Francesco Maccarini and dr Martha Thomae. Participants worked in two groups on assessed projects involving digital music encoding and transcription tasks using newly acquired skills and tools. These workshops constitute an important practical component of the School, allowing participants to apply theoretical knowledge in collaborative work.

The intensive academic programme was followed by an informal group dinner, during which lecturers and participants had the opportunity to exchange experiences, discuss their research interests, and integrate in a less formal atmosphere.

Another inspiring and intensive day of Wrocław Digital Musicology School is behind us – and more workshops, lectures and discussions are still ahead!
